Listed as an Any Other Weapon, not a shotgun. It's just part of the marketing to put that on there as they are marketed to the LEO crowd, but I assure you you don't have to be a cop to buy them.Yes, legal in Louisiana. OH! And just because they say "Law Enforcement" on them doesn't mean civvies can't buy them. Great lineup and the prices at sgammo make them a no brainer. I also highly recommended these for slugs. Federal also makes a low recoil Law Enforcement tru-ball slug that are awesome out of a smooth bore. I highly recommend them for range use and HD. Muzzle Velocity is 1145fps according to the box. You won't believe how great they are till you choot 'em lol. I mean like they are awesome compared to shells with regular wads.

Anyway, these also have the flight control wad. Looks better in court is my thought there. So if I have to use them, I'm using what the cops use. They are low recoil, which is nice for longer range sessions, and they are what my local PD uses. They come in 250 round cases for a great price. I shoot federal premium law enforcement low recoil shells. My opinion is that if a load cannot effectively penetrate drywall it also cannot effectively penetrate denim, meat, fat, and bone. There is some debate on if birdshot is acceptable since misses might not over penetrate. Just buy cheap - since you're running a pump, you don't need to worry about cycling the action and since you're shooting at targets, you don't need to worry about stopping power.įor HD, stick with 00 buck or slugs. Target loads are meant for shooting at clay pigeons bird shot should be pretty self explanatory. High brass means more propellant and thus more kick low brass means less propellant and thus less kick. If they allow shot, any low brass target/bird shot will do. Slugs generally have a lot more kick than shot and tend to be more expensive as well - so putting more than a dozen or so slugs downrange is not something I'd do very often. If they ban shot, they might have restrictions on what types of slugs they allow depending on what they use as backstop material. Some indoor ranges don't allow you to shoot shot since it might hit the target cables.

I'm not sure what the difference of game and target loads are, what hydra shok is, etc. There are so many terms for shotgun ammunition vs regular 223/9mm ammo. For slugs, I should be getting rifled slugs since my barrel is smooth. Lower the shot number = bigger the pellets. My understanding of shotgun ammunition is as follows:įor my 590A1, I should be buying 12 gauge, 2 3/4 - 3inch. Winchester X-Super High Velocity Steel Shot These are the ones that I saw there today:įederal Multi-Purpose Load, Field & Target I went to my local Walmart and was so confused on the ammunition. I would prefer to buy in bulk over the internet from SGAmmo before I wont be able to anymore in 2018 (California laws). I'd like to have mainly slugs for the range (and maybe regular ammunition occasionally too?), and of course 00 buck for HD. I go to outdoor range and will be shooting steel and paper targets. My main use for it will be range shooting/fun and home defense.

Can I get some recommendations on what to use for it?

I've been trying to do some research on what ammunition to to buy for it but I haven't had much luck on anything definitive. So far, I plan on putting the Magpul furniture on it (fore-end and stock) and a light. Tomorrow, my 10 day waiting period (California) will be over and I will be picking up my Mossberg 590A1 (ITEM# 50774).
